MAT China Strategy
How MAT reaches Chinese wrestling fans — a content-first, platform-native plan with an honest read on the Great Firewall, ICP, payments and PIPL.
Reaching Chinese wrestling fans is a content-first, not a site-first, problem. Because YouTube, Google and the major Western social networks are blocked and a foreign-hosted site loads slowly (10–30s) behind the Great Firewall, MAT wins by publishing native content on Bilibili, Douyin, Weibo, Youku and Xiaohongshu, and by running an owned WeChat funnel (Official Account Mini-Program WeChat Pay/Alipay). ICP filing and onshore hosting come later — only when paid membership hits real scale — because an ICP is a legal/hosting decision, not a speed switch.
1 · Platform map — where the fans actually are
| Platform | What it is | MAT's use | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bilibili (哔哩哔哩) | Long-form video + danmaku; young, fandom-heavy core | Primary video home — highlights, breakdowns, docs. The YouTube substitute; embeddable via the facade pattern. | P0 |
| Douyin (抖音) | China's TikTok; short vertical video, huge reach + commerce | Viral finishes, hooks and clips driving to Bilibili and the site. | P0 |
| WeChat (微信) | Super-app: messaging, Official Accounts, Mini-Programs, Channels, Pay | Owned CRM, retention, membership and payments. See §3. | P0 |
| Weibo (微博) | Twitter-like microblog; news, trending, celebrity | Real-time results, event hype, hashtags (#话题#), announcements. | P1 |
| Xiaohongshu / RED (小红书) | Lifestyle discovery + search; text+photo "notes" | SEO-like discovery, listicles, athlete lifestyle, growing sports niche. | P1 |
| Youku (优酷) | Alibaba's long-form video; more mainstream/older than Bilibili | Alternate video host / embeds where Bilibili is weak. | P2 |
| Baidu · Doubao · Kimi | Baidu search (Google blocked) + Chinese AI engines | China-GEO: allow Bytespider; Baidu SEO if onshore. See §6. | P2 |
2 · The content-first playbook
Native video, no ICP
Cut MAT's best highlights, five-star breakdowns and data explainers into native Bilibili + Douyin + Weibo accounts. This needs no ICP and dodges the Great Firewall entirely.
WeChat as CRM
Stand up a WeChat Official Account as the owned retention channel — weekly classic-match rewinds, event recaps, and the entry point to the membership funnel.
A survivable zh edition
Serve a lightweight zh-Hans site tuned to survive the GFW: no Google Fonts, no YouTube, no googleapis/gstatic, self-hosted assets, Chinese video embeds only.
QR-first everything
Every share point gets a QR: follow the OA, open the Mini-Program, pay, or share a wrestler card. White quiet-zone, ≥160px, high contrast, "长按识别二维码" for in-app viewing.
Stats travel
MAT's edge is data — five-star ratings, records, historical significance. Numbered lists and tale-of-the-tape graphics translate cleanly and are inherently shareable on RED and Weibo.
Event-tied cycles
Anchor pushes to WWE PLEs and AEW events in China-friendly time slots: pre-event hype on Weibo, live clips on Douyin, full breakdowns on Bilibili the next day.
3 · The WeChat membership funnel
WeChat is a walled super-app — content lives inside it and is largely un-crawlable by outside search, so treat it as an owned channel, not SEO. The funnel is Official Account Mini-Program WeChat Pay / Alipay.
| Surface | Role in the funnel | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Official Account — Subscription (订阅号) | Top of funnel / retention | Best for media/publishers; can post ~daily; shows in the Subscriptions feed. Good default for a fan site. |
| Official Account — Service (服务号) | Payments + richer menus | 4 posts/month but unlocks richer APIs, menus and WeChat Pay — better once you want membership/payments. |
| Mini-Program (小程序) | The product in China | App-like, no install; runs the "wrestler/match" database natively in China without ICP-blocked website woes. Supports WeChat Pay for memberships. |
| Channels (视频号) | Viral spread inside WeChat | Native short-video feed tied to OA, Moments and livestreams. Cross-post Douyin clips here. |
| WeChat Pay / Alipay | Conversion | The two dominant rails; credit cards are rare. QR is the universal pay + follow mechanism. |
QR-first capture
Anonymous fan scans the OA QR enters the Subscription feed taps into the Mini-Program database converts to paid via WeChat Pay/Alipay. The same QR pattern the 中文 membership page ships is the funnel's front door.
4 · Payments
WeChat Pay + Alipay
The two dominant methods; locals expect native Pay. Run memberships via a Service Account or Mini-Program (WeChat Pay) plus Alipay.
Foreign merchants
WeChat Pay/Alipay cross-border (or aggregators) exist for foreign merchants but need a real merchant entity + KYC and settle in your currency.
Cards-in-app
Both apps now accept international credit cards linked inside the app for inbound visitors — a fallback, not the default expectation for locals.
5 · ICP & PIPL — the honest reality
| Item | What it actually means |
|---|---|
| ICP filing (ICP备案 / "beian") | Required to legally host a site on mainland-China servers for informational content. Provincial MIIT approval; needs a China business entity/legal presence. |
| ICP commercial license (ICP证) | Additionally required if you sell/charge (paid membership, e-commerce, ads-as-service). Must hold the filing first. |
| Hosting outside China | No ICP required — but you're behind the GFW: slow, throttled or intermittently blocked. An ICP does not fix speed by itself; it's a legal/hosting decision, not a performance switch. |
| Legal and fast in China | Generally needs a China entity (or partner/agent), an ICP filing, and onshore or "hybrid"/China-edge CDN hosting. |
| PIPL / CSL / DSL (data localization) | Personal data of China users generally must be stored in China; cross-border transfer needs security assessment/standard contract/consent. |
MAT's honest take: don't chase ICP first. Win on-platform (Bilibili/Douyin/Weibo/WeChat) where the audience and the fast infra already are; pursue ICP + onshore hosting only when there's a real paid-membership-at-scale business case. Because MAT uses no browser storage and minimal PII, it is already low-risk under PIPL — the China edition keeps it that way.
6 · Localization, hreflang & China-GEO
Localization + hreflang
- Serve a real
zh-Hansedition at /zh/ with<html lang="zh-Hans">; reciprocal hreflang pairs +x-default. - No Google Fonts /
googleapis.com/gstatic.com— blocked/slow in China. Use the system CJK stack (Noto Sans SCfallback). - Professional human translation for wrestling terminology; provide
alternateNamein both scripts (e.g. 送葬者 = The Undertaker, 布雷特·哈特 = Bret Hart, 罗曼·雷恩斯 = Roman Reigns). - Chinese video embeds only (Bilibili/Youku) via the facade pattern; self-host poster images (more GFW-robust).
China-GEO
- Baidu is the search engine (Google blocked). If hosting onshore, do Baidu SEO, add Baidu-specific meta, and submit to Baidu Search Console — Baidu weights on-page keywords and freshness more literally.
- Allow Bytespider (ByteDance, powering Doubao) in robots.txt, alongside GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and ClaudeBot.
- Answer-first content + FAQ + hard statistics travel across engines — the same GEO tactics that win globally also win in Doubao / Kimi.
- The llms.txt map and dense internal linking give Chinese AI crawlers a clean entity graph.
