The Story
Kurt Angle retained the WWE Championship in what is widely held up as one of the finest technical matches WWE has ever produced. It matters because it demonstrated that, deep in the sports-entertainment era, a world title match could still be built entirely on mat mastery — and it gave the smaller, submission-based Chris Benoit a marquee showcase against the company's best pure wrestler.
There were no gimmicks and no shortcuts. From the opening lockup the two traded amateur takedowns, then escalated into a chess match of German suplexes, ankle locks, and Crippler Crossface attempts, each hold flowing into a counter with almost improvised precision. The Boston crowd, initially neutral, was won over hold by hold until it was hanging on every near-fall.
Angle survived a barrage of Benoit's suplexes and repeated Crossface escapes to finally retain, but both men left elevated. Angle has since called it the best match of his career, and it stands as a benchmark whenever fans argue that WWE main events can be won on wrestling alone rather than spectacle.
