Royal Rumble
WWE’s annual January battle royal, where 30 superstars fight for one prize — the main event of WrestleMania.
How the match works
One match, one rule set, elimination by the top rope. Here’s the format that has held since 1988:
Two start
Entrants #1 and #2 open the match alone in the ring.
Every ~90 sec
A new entrant arrives on a timed interval until the field reaches 30.
Over the top
You’re out only when thrown over the top rope with both feet on the floor.
Last one wins
The final superstar standing takes the match — and the title shot.
It debuted as a 20-man match on a USA Network television special on January 24, 1988 in Hamilton, Ontario, and expanded to its signature 30-man format the following year.
What’s at stake
Since 1993, the winner earns a world-championship match at that year’s WrestleMania — making the Rumble the official starting gun for WWE’s Road to WrestleMania. That single stipulation turned a novelty bout into the second-biggest night on the wrestling calendar.
Record-book moments
The women’s Rumble & going global
A women’s Royal Rumble was added in 2018, won by Asuka, and now runs on the same card with the same WrestleMania stakes. The event has also gone stadium-sized and global: 2025 was the first Rumble held outside January, and the 2026 edition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — won by Roman Reigns and Liv Morgan — was the first ever staged outside North America. This page catalogues every Royal Rumble from 1988 to 2026.
Why the Royal Rumble matters
The Royal Rumble is the structural keystone of WWE's storytelling year. Every January it converts an entire roster into a single number-one contender, launching the roughly two-and-a-half-month build to WrestleMania. Because one match can elevate almost anyone — a returning veteran, a surprise entrant, a newly minted main-eventer — the Rumble is WWE's most efficient star-making machine, and its result sets the direction of the entire spring.
Commercially it anchors the first quarter of the year: a marquee event that drives subscriptions, ticket sales and host-city tourism, and increasingly a global tentpole (the 2026 edition was staged in Saudi Arabia). For the performers, a Rumble win or a memorable iron-man run is a permanent career marker — which is why this hub links back to nearly every main-event profile on Wrestle Lore.
