A short history of NXT
NXT began around 2010 as a game-show-style competition before relaunching in 2012 as WWE's developmental brand at the Orlando Performance Center. Under the creative direction of Triple H, it quickly became something no developmental territory had ever been: appointment viewing. Seth Rollins was crowned the first-ever NXT Champion in 2014, and the special-event TakeOver series turned the brand into a critical darling.
The "Black-and-Gold" era (2014–2021) was NXT's golden age. Triple H signed indie standouts and international icons — Finn Balor (from NJPW's Bullet Club), Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens and Samoa Joe — and let them wrestle a harder-hitting, story-first style. TakeOver events produced multiple five-star matches, including Andrade Almas vs Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole vs Gargano, and the long-form Gargano-Ciampa saga became a modern storytelling benchmark.
NXT was also the launchpad of the women's revolution. The Four Horsewomen — Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks (Mercedes Mone) and Bayley — proved women could headline, with the 2015 Bayley vs Banks TakeOver: Brooklyn classic changing how WWE booked its women's division. In 2021 WWE rebranded the brand as "NXT 2.0"; the Black-and-Gold years remain its creative high point and WWE's most important talent pipeline.
