TNA: the foundation
Styles was the original franchise player and on-screen face of TNA. He was the promotion's first-ever X Division Champion and held that title six times, the division built around his athleticism as much as anyone's. He also held the NWA World Heavyweight and TNA World Heavyweight Championships across his time there, and is credited as the first wrestler to complete both the TNA Triple Crown and Grand Slam.
TNA peers on Wrestle Lore include Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels and Bully Ray. See the full TNA / Impact history for the surrounding era.
NJPW and Bullet Club: the transformation
Styles arrived in New Japan Pro-Wrestling at Invasion Attack in April 2014, revealed as a new Bullet Club member, and succeeded founder Finn Balor (then Prince Devitt) as the faction's leader that year. The reinvention was immediate.
| IWGP Heavyweight title | Won | Defeated | Reign |
|---|---|---|---|
| First reign | May 3, 2014 | Kazuchika Okada | about 163 days |
| Second reign | February 11, 2015 | Hiroshi Tanahashi | about 144 days |
Headlining Wrestle Kingdom and trading the top belt with Okada and Tanahashi turned Styles from a respected veteran into a global main-event name. Kenny Omega later took over Bullet Club after turning on Styles in January 2016.
WWE: the peak
Styles debuted for WWE as a surprise entrant in the January 2016 Royal Rumble. He became a two-time WWE Champion: his first reign began on September 11, 2016, when he beat Dean Ambrose and held the title about 140 days, and his second began on November 7, 2017, when he beat Jinder Mahal and held it about 371 days, one of the longest modern reigns. He also held the United States Championship in 2017 and 2019 and the Intercontinental Championship in 2020.
His marquee WWE feuds ran through John Cena, Shinsuke Nakamura, an NJPW peer he faced again on a WWE stage, and Roman Reigns.
The curtain call
AJ Styles wrestled his retirement match against Gunther at WWE Royal Rumble 2026 on January 31, 2026, and lost, closing a 28-year career that ran from the TNA X Division through the Tokyo Dome to the top of WWE. His induction into the WWE Hall of Fame has been reported for 2026; Wrestle Lore lists it as pending until WWE confirms the ceremony.
