The Story
Eddie Guerrero defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship, the first world title of his career and the first world title won by a wrestler of Mexican descent in WWE. It is the emotional peak of one of the most beloved runs in company history.
The story was pure monster versus underdog. Brock Lesnar had been booked for nearly two years as an unstoppable force, a genuine amateur wrestling champion with size and speed that dwarfed the challenger. Eddie Guerrero was the smaller man the entire arena was pulling for, a lucha rooted showman whose real-life comeback had the crowd desperate to see him finally reach the top.
They built a patient, thirty minute David and Goliath match, Lesnar controlling with power while Eddie chipped away with speed, guile and heart. The finish leaned on the Goldberg feud running toward WrestleMania XX: a referee bump, Lesnar reaching for the belt, Goldberg's interference, and then Eddie countering a second F-5 into a DDT onto the belt before climbing the ropes for the Frog Splash and the three count. The overbooked closing stretch is the one knock on an otherwise unforgettable night.
The celebration is what endures. Eddie collapsed in tears, then rose with the title held high as confetti fell and the Cow Palace roared. Weeks later at WrestleMania XX he retained against Kurt Angle, and the show closed on Eddie and Chris Benoit embracing as world champions in Madison Square Garden.
