The Story
The match went the full 60-minute time limit to a draw, so Samoa Joe retained the ROH World Championship — and in doing so, "Joe vs Punk II" legitimized the American independent scene as a home for world-class wrestling. It is the best chapter of the Joe/Punk trilogy that defined early ROH.
What makes it a foundational text is the pacing. A full hour of wrestling should sag somewhere; this one never does. Joe, the immovable champion, and Punk, the ambitious challenger who framed the whole feud as a war for ROH's soul, built the drama in waves — mat exchanges giving way to strikes, near-falls stacking higher as the clock wound toward zero.
When time expired with the title still around Joe's waist, the draw felt like a victory for both men and for the promotion itself. Dave Meltzer awarding it five stars — ROH's first ever — validated the entire indie movement, and the match became a blueprint for the boom that would later feed WWE, NXT, and AEW. Punk carried that same fearlessness into his 2011 pipebomb summer.
