“Mean” Mark Callous
“Mean” Mark Callous was the WCW ring name of Mark Calaway — the future Undertaker — from 1989 to 1990. A black-clad, eerily agile big man managed by Paul E. Dangerously (Paul Heyman), he formed half of the Skyscrapers, feuded with the Road Warriors, and challenged Lex Luger for the US Title. It was, in every way, the Deadman's dress rehearsal.

By late 1989, Calaway had cycled through territory names — Texas Red, the Master of Pain, the Punisher — before landing in WCW as "Mean" Mark Callous, a name credited to Terry Funk. He wrestled almost entirely in black, moved with startling agility for a man his size (including a rope-walk that predated The Undertaker's "Old School"), and carried the ominous presence WWE would soon build a legend around.
He was folded into The Skyscrapers alongside Dan Spivey, a dominant power tag team best known for a violent feud with the Road Warriors. As a singles wrestler he was managed by Paul E. Dangerously — the future Paul Heyman — an early chapter in one of wrestling's most enduring partnerships.
His signature singles showcase came at the Great American Bash on July 7, 1990, challenging Lex Luger for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. He lost, but the match circulates to this day as a "young Undertaker" highlight. When WCW booker Ole Anderson dismissed his drawing potential, Calaway signed with WWE — debuting at Survivor Series 1990 as The Undertaker.
