The Story
Shawn Michaels won after Kane made his debut, tore the cell door from its hinges, Tombstoned The Undertaker and let HBK steal the pin. It was the first-ever Hell in a Cell — the blueprint for the most iconic gimmick match WWE would ever create, executed with a violence and drama that later Cells rarely matched.
The feud demanded a cage that could contain it. Michaels, the cocky centerpiece of the emerging D-Generation X, had spent weeks tormenting The Undertaker, and the giant roofed structure was built specifically to keep interference out. Instead it produced escalating brutality: Michaels bumping off the side of the cell through the announce table, both men bloodied, and the referee dragged out of the ring so the war could continue unchecked.
The finish rewrote WWF history. The arena lights cut to red, pyro exploded, and Kane — Undertaker's storyline younger brother, appearing for the first time — ripped the cell door open, delivered a Tombstone to the Deadman, and walked away. A barely-conscious Michaels draped an arm across Undertaker for the three-count. The structure's psychology, the blade jobs and the escape spots all originate here, giving Hell in a Cell instant mythology and setting the Undertaker–Kane saga in motion.
