The Story
Steve Austin won the WWF Championship — then aligned with Vince McMahon in a shocking heel turn. It closed the main event of what many call the greatest WrestleMania ever, pitting the two biggest stars of the boom against each other at the absolute peak of the Attitude Era, and it ended the era's golden age on a stunning, blood-soaked note.
The stakes were personal and immense. Austin, gaunt and desperate after neck surgery, had told the world he would do anything to win back the title; The Rock was the reigning ace at the height of his charisma. For long stretches they simply beat each other senseless in a No-Disqualification brawl, Austin bleeding heavily, the Houston crowd roaring behind their Texas hero.
Then the twist: Vince McMahon, Austin's sworn enemy for years, wandered to ringside — and Austin accepted his help, shaking McMahon's hand and clubbing Rock with a steel chair over and over to finally win the gold. It was one of the most debated creative decisions in company history, a betrayal of everything the character stood for, and it reset the entire landscape heading out of the Attitude Era.
