The TLC Tag Wars
Three teams, tables, ladders and chairs — a whole match genre, invented.
The TLC tag wars revitalized tag team wrestling and created an entire match genre. The Hardy Boyz, the Dudley Boyz and Edge & Christian — including Wrestle Lore roster members Edge, Bubba Ray Dudley (Bully Ray) and Lita — pushed tag wrestling to violent, high-flying extremes across a series of ladder and Tables, Ladders & Chairs matches that WWE still runs today.
Timeline
The three teams begin trading the tag titles, each bringing a distinct identity — the daredevil Hardys, the table-obsessed Dudleys, the cocky Edge & Christian.
The Triangle Ladder Match at WrestleMania 2000 raises the bar and hints at the carnage to come.
The first-ever TLC match at SummerSlam 2000 adds tables and chairs to the ladder formula.
TLC II at WrestleMania X-Seven — with Rhyno, Spike Dudley and Lita adding chaos — becomes the definitive spot-fest, won by Edge & Christian.
The Arc
What made the trilogy special was contrast. The Hardys were fearless high-flyers who'd throw their bodies off anything; the Dudleys were the hardcore tacticians obsessed with putting people through tables; Edge & Christian were the smirking opportunists always ready to steal a win. Three clear identities meant that even amid the chaos, every spot told a story about who these teams were.
Across the Triangle Ladder Match, the first TLC, and the climactic TLC II at WrestleMania X-Seven, they escalated the violence into something genuinely new — Edge's mid-air spear on a dangling Jeff Hardy, the Swanton bombs from the top of ladders, bodies crashing through stacked tables. It was car-crash choreography elevated to art, and it single-handedly made tag team wrestling appointment viewing again. The TLC match they invented became a permanent fixture of the WWE calendar, and every modern multi-man ladder match owes a debt to these three teams.
Key Matches
The Wrestlers
Of the six men and their allies, three are on the Wrestle Lore roster: Edge of Edge & Christian, Bully Ray — who wrestled as Bubba Ray Dudley — and Lita, the Hardys' iconic ringside partner. Their teammates and rivals — Matt and Jeff Hardy, Christian, D-Von Dudley, Rhyno and Spike Dudley — are noted in plain text.
