Biography
Roddy Piper (Roderick George Toombs) was the greatest heel talker of the Golden Era and one of wrestling's most naturally gifted entertainers. His Piper's Pit interview segment defined what wrestling promos could be — dangerous, unpredictable, genuinely uncomfortable.
Piper's role in the first WrestleMania was central: feuding with Hulk Hogan through 1984–85 gave WWF its essential conflict. As heel manager of Paul Orndorff at WrestleMania I, Piper's star power was a key ingredient in making the event feel like a genuine main event spectacle.
Piper could work babyface nearly as well as heel — his transition to fan favorite in the late 1980s and 1990s showed range few of his contemporaries possessed. His 1989 film They Live remains a cult classic. Roddy Piper passed away in July 2015 from cardiac arrest at age 61.
