Biography
Yokozuna was one of the most dominant and feared WWF Champions of the early 1990s. A member of the Anoa'i wrestling family, he portrayed a Japanese sumo villain managed by Mr. Fuji — a deliberate throwback to Cold War-era foreign heel booking at a time when it still drew massive heat.
Yokozuna's two WWF Championship reigns defined the New Generation's villain side. He famously defeated Bret Hart at WrestleMania IX — and then immediately lost the belt to Hulk Hogan in an impromptu challenge — before recapturing gold from Hogan at King of the Ring 1993.
His later tag team run with Owen Hart showed unexpected comic chemistry. Yokozuna's peak power and presence at his size remains one of wrestling's genuine athletic achievements. He passed away in October 2000 from pulmonary edema at age 34.
