From OMEGA to the gorilla position

Helms started wrestling in 1991 at 17 on the North Carolina independent circuit, sharing rings in OMEGA, the Cameron, NC promotion run by Matt and Jeff Hardy, alongside fellow future star Shannon Moore. WCW signed him in 1999 and packaged him with Moore and Evan Karagias as 3 Count, a boy-band trio that shared a WCW Hardcore Championship win in February 2000 before Helms broke out solo as Sugar Shane, beating Chavo Guerrero Jr. for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship at Greed in March 2001.

When WCW folded, Helms crossed to the WWF during the Invasion and got the gimmick of his life: The Hurricane, a green-caped superhero who mixed comedy with legitimate cruiserweight chops. The character connected so well that a joke opponent pinned The Rock clean-ish on Raw in 2003. The serious turn came in 2006, when a slicked-back Gregory Helms held the Cruiserweight Championship for 385 straight days. A broken neck in 2007, a 2008 comeback and a 2010 release closed the WWE in-ring chapter, but not the WWE story.

Behind the curtain

The Producer Era

On January 28, 2019, WWE hired Shane Helms as a backstage producer. Producers (also called agents) are the layer between creative and the ring: they help wrestlers lay out matches, structure the big spots, manage timing with the TV truck, and relay feedback after the segment airs. It is a job usually reserved for trusted veterans, and a former cruiserweight who worked comedy, hardcore, tag and title matches brings a wide toolkit to it.

The role survived a scare: Helms was furloughed in April 2020 during WWE's pandemic budget cuts, then brought back in November 2020. He signed a WWE Legends deal on March 24, 2022, and per the most recent reports has continued working as a producer since, with the 2021 Royal Rumble cameo standing as his last in-ring appearance on WWE programming.

Finisher

Vertebreaker

Back-to-back double underhook piledriver

The Sugar Shane era finisher and one of the scariest moves of the cruiserweight boom: opponents dropped head-first from a back-to-back hold. Rarely seen in his later WWE years.

Finisher

Eye of the Hurricane

Spinning headlock elbow drop

The Hurricane's named finisher, later recycled under the name Nightmare on Helms Street during the Gregory Helms era.

Finisher

Shining Wizard

Running knee strike

The strike Gregory Helms leaned on through his record cruiserweight reign, borrowed from Japanese wrestling's playbook.

Crowd favorite

Hurri-chokeslam

Superhero-sized chokeslam

A 200-pounder chokeslamming giants was the joke that always landed. The double chokeslam attempt returned at the 2021 Royal Rumble against Big E and Bobby Lashley.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is The Hurricane a WWE producer?

Yes. Shane Helms was hired as a WWE backstage producer on January 28, 2019. He was furloughed in April 2020 during pandemic budget cuts, returned to the role in November 2020, and signed a WWE Legends deal in March 2022 while continuing to work as a producer.

Did The Hurricane really beat The Rock?

Yes. On the March 10, 2003 episode of Raw, The Hurricane pinned The Rock after a distraction from Stone Cold Steve Austin. It remains one of the most famous upsets in Raw history and the biggest singles win of Helms' career.

How long was Gregory Helms Cruiserweight Champion?

Gregory Helms won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in an open invitational at the Royal Rumble on January 29, 2006 and held it until No Way Out on February 18, 2007, a 385-day reign. It made him the longest-reigning cruiserweight champion in WWE history and, at the time, the longest-reigning champion of any kind in SmackDown brand history.

What is the Vertebreaker?

The Vertebreaker is a back-to-back double underhook piledriver that drops the opponent head-first. Helms used it as his finisher during his Sugar Shane run in WCW and in his early WWE years, and it is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous finishers of its era.
